IBPSA-Italy and the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano are pleased to announce the

 

5th Student School on
Building Performance Simulation Applications

Urban Building Energy Modelling and Simulation of Smart Districts
 

The school, which is part of the special program for graduate and PhD Students, will take place on Wednesday 24th June , with an all-day program (Campus of the Faculty of Engineering, Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, via Bruno Buozzi 1, classroom B1.1.01).

Morning session (9:00 – 12:00)
  • Prof. Giovanni Pernigotto (Free University of Bozen-Bolzano) and Prof. Ilaria Ballarini (Polytechnic University of Torino): “Welcome and Introduction”
  • Dr. Roberto Boghetti (IDIAP): “Deep Learning Methods for Fast and Differentiable Simulation of District Heating Networks”
  • Dr. Vittoria Benedetti and Prof. Alessandro Prada (University of Trento): “Towards Climate-Resilient District Heating and Cooling Systems: Dynamic Simulation of Future Scenarios”
  • Dr. Cesare Forzano and Prof. Annamaria Buonomano (University of Naples Federico II): “The Role of Simulation in the Design of Zero-Energy Buildings and Urban Systems”
Afternoon session (14:00 – 16:30)
  • Prof. Francesco Causone (Polytechnic University of Milan): “Archetype Approach to Urban Building Energy Modelling”
  • Dr. Jacopo Vivian and Prof. Angelo Zarrella (University of Padova): “Analysis of Building Energy Retrofit Scenarios and Urban Microclimates with Urban Energy Models”
  • Round Table on Future Trends and Current Challenges on Urban Simulation

The workshop is open to graduate and PhD students and is included in the registration fee for the conference Building Simulation Applications BSA 2026.

Student competition

The best papers have been selected by a committee with members from the Students Tutoring Scientific Committee, based both on the reviewers’ comments and on the scientific merit of the students’ researches. The papers of the finalists will be presented in a dedicated session and the 3 best ones awarded with a certification from IBPSA-Italy on June 26th.
